BACK AND NECK PAIN
Dr Monk has used acupuncture and gentle manipulation with great success for more than 30 years to manage and relieve back and neck pain. The particular expertise of this practice is in dealing with problematic or complex cases.
Many of our patients have had pain for years - even for decades. They can frequently still be helped, often to become pain free, and can be enabled to return to work or their chosen sport. We are more than happy to see patients who have tried a variety of treatment approaches elsewhere; this is not a barrier to treatment.
Three years ago the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) accepted the value of acupuncture and manipulation for low back and neck pain which have been present for less than a year. If you have simple pain like this then we suggest you take the NHS option in the first instance, since our practice is exclusively private.
The NICE guidelines exclude patients who have low back pain with pain radiating or spreading down the leg, or those patients with neck pain and pain radiating down the arm. The guidelines also exclude those who have had pain for more than 12 months. If you have more complex pain or pain that does not resolve quickly, then we would be happy to see you and treat you.
Some patients will have continuing pain despite an operation on the back or neck. Over the years we have seen patients who, despite several operations on the back, have continuing pain (the record stands at 5 spinal operations), but we have still managed to help reduce or relieve their pain, sometimes by the gentlest of manipulations, sometimes by acupuncture or by trigger point needling, often with a combination of several approaches.
